Ally Tam

If anyone knows about feverish consumer product evangelism, it’s me

A serious gamer from way back, Ally turned her early passion for consumer technology brands into a passion for partnering with founder entrepreneurs who put consumers at the center of their product decision-making.

No "I" In Team

I loved the team-player mentality. Collaboration equals better decision making and outcomes for everyone around the table, investors and entrepreneurs alike. I was also attracted by VMG’s exceptional reputation with entrepreneurs.

Love For Consumer Tech

Consumer technology played a prominent role in my life. I took apart computers as a kid, coded, built and designed websites in high school, and couldn’t wait to get my hands on the next consumer tech product. I grew up right at the intersection of brand and technology.

Describe your younger, childhood self.

I was a pretty serious gamer at that age—specifically multiplayer arena combat, for those who care. We each played a specific character with unique skillsets – you weren’t allowed to duplicate functions. We all had our roles to play. My “crew” played together for years. True confession: my team competed and won the US championship match, and we were invited to travel to the Philippines to compete in the world tournament. But I decided to stay home and study for the SATs and subbed out. (Phew. I feel better now).

No judgement. How did growing up in San Francisco shape you?

I was around a lot of diversity and eccentricity. I’m drawn to the weird, the quirky and the unusual as a result.

What about your background points to a future with the Catalyst team?

Consumer technology played a prominent role in my life. I took apart computers as a kid, coded, built and designed websites in high school, and couldn’t wait to get my hands on the next consumer tech product. I grew up right at the intersection of brand and technology. I had the first generation iMac, iPod and iPhone. I was obsessed with Apple products and wore an Apple logo tee shirt. That brand touched me in a really emotional way. If anyone knows about feverish consumer product evangelism, it’s me!

What first drew you to Catalyst?

I loved the team-player mentality. Collaboration = better decision making and outcomes for everyone around the table, investors and entrepreneurs alike. I was also attracted by VMG’s exceptional reputation with entrepreneurs.

How does Catalyst feel different from traditional venture firms in the consumer landscape?

We aren’t generalists. We bring deep supply chain expertise and operational excellence. VMG’s relationships in the strategic landscape is a huge value-add as well. We know how to unlock those connections and translate to impactful business opportunities. We’re partners with our entrepreneurs. We use this existing ecosystem and network to create optionality so our companies are in control of their own destiny.

What opportunities ahead most excite you?

I’m excited to invest in new interpretations of traditional service “brands”. Our founder partners are (re)prioritizing the user at the center of their product decision making and empowering the everyday consumer.

What is it about you in particular that contributes to the VMG culture?

We’re all team players. We have no fear of sharing in an open, honest discussion and trust that we’ll do great things together.

No subbing out.

Never again. I’m all in.
